ESR - Covid-19 Waste Water Testing

Please click the link above - or see an image of the map and list below - this is a great visualization.

It is interesting to note on the table that only on the week ending October 16th were all current testing sites sampled in Northland. This is despite the initial positive test in Whangarei being detected on October 4th, later confirmed on October 7th, leading to a region wide Level 3 lockdown that started October 8th.

Perhaps resources have been diverted to Auckland in an effort to pin point hotspots there? Ideally sampling of all sites would have been happening each week?

It is also interesting to note that Northland has 19 testing sites, but Southland only one. This is understandable given Northland is at a much higher risk than Southland because of it’s physical proximity to the Auckland outbreak. But given that waste water testing for Covid-19 appears to be a valuable tool for early detection - hopefully the resourcing of this is scaled up in the future around the country?

Regards, Ben.

Good morning.

A lot has happened since this post!

ESR has evolved their wastewater detection system and have just released a dashboard that you can find here. Learn more about it here. You can get the data from Github here.

Below is 6 month data for NZ alongside Northland. It is interesting to compare current wastewater levels with a peak in March. To my eye it looks like nationwide a very recent spike was getting close to the peak back in March. Here in Northland - the recent spike looks more like half what we had in the peak in March?

And here is a map view. You can compare this week to last, 2 weeks ago, 4 weeks ago, or 12 weeks ago and the arrows will adjust. Great tool. Would be awesome to see the collection sites expand further into the rural parts of the regions.

Have a good day. Ben.
