Background
We’ve got a great feature on the eHealth Forum: the ability to reply by email. This allows rapid replies to things without the hassle of having to jump onto the website or app, which is brilliant.
However, due to email being a 50-odd year old system and poor adherence to standards, this inevitably causes issues. The biggest practical one is that of email signatures coming through. Unfortunately, this has the effect of filling up the thread with gumpf that disrupts the reading experience of others.
Example
Here is an extreme example, where the simple two line message is turned into a 40 line unreadable monstrosity:
How to fix this
Discourse (our software platform) is pretty good at picking up most of these automatically, but some still get through. If yours are causing a problem, here are your options:
Reply from the website / app instead
Simply click the link in the email and reply from where it takes you. You might need to login the first time of course.
Edit your email signature
In your email client, e.g. Outlook, Gmail) find the settings that control your email signature.
Edit this so that it contains the standard denoter, "-- ", in a line by itself at the top.
- in words, that is dash dash space
- it must be on its own line, usually in the first line of your signature. You signature text can start on the next line
Send the @moderators an email
If that doesn’t work, send an email to moderators@forum.hinz.org.nz telling them about it so they can see it for themselves and look at the technical side.
