The Clinical Informatics Position Statement is ready for publication. Before we publish we need your input as to whether you feel it’s ready. The position statement was initially developed by a CiLN team in October 2019, discussed in a workshop at the November CiLN meeting at the Digital Health Week, and was refined during the last few months. While we wait for the infographic from the graphic designers, we would like to know if you think the document is ready for publication.
Hi, this is really great, arguably the only thing potentially needs strengthened is the link with Informatics Clinicians within their respective organisations and professional bodies, although this is a very minor critique - as I think you have covered this generally. I’ve attached some role-specific work I did a while ago re this…may (or may not) prove useful. Perhaps the point I’m making is one around clinicians being able to articulate what they do in context of their organisational and professional context. Food for thought. Awesome work by you and everyone else across the CiLN network. My only negative is that the data and particularly the analytics is very understated. Acknowledging my own prejudices, clinically lead statistics and data science is a key element often missing in decision making. Not wishing to undermine the contribution of others in the discipline but this is another important way that Health Informaticians can support Digital Health delivery.
My page 1 ends mid sentence?
I like it. It’s clear and straightforward. It covers the wide scope of Informatics, without getting too confusing.
Thank you to everyone who put time into this.
I only popped no in the vote as the last sentence on the bottom of page 2 is incomplete. Otherwise having read through it I do think its accurately spells out the value and role of clinical informaticians and spells out where the future should lie. Great work guys. Thanks for the hard graft on this.
Great work, I appreciate that it’s a short, easy read.
I answered not sure because:
As per Era’s points above, last sentence on page one appears incomplete and references don’t appear not embedded within the text
Topics I feel that are understated:
appropriate use and application of data and digital health technologies does not seem sufficient (particularly in page 1)
evaluation of new data-drive and digital health technologies (not explicitly
user and consumer experience design/research - if this is being rolled up into ‘design’, then I think it needs more clarity
Current state lack of investment in people and process (the focus here seems more on the underinvestment in hardware/software)
patient/consumer/client/whanau engagement
digital and data literacy and skills - to me, there needs to be capability, skills and literacy both in digital and data.
more modern ways of working, not just new models of care. I believe more modern ways of working could encompass models of care and some of the non-clinical business improvements which can result in improved health and business outcomes.
Suggested refinement and more explicit language:
Page 1
“promotes the use of standards and interoperability to support data and information requirements to improve safety and patient outcomes”
“contributes to improved clinical safety and patient outcomes”
“supports new models of care, population health measures, and equity and access to good healthcare outcomes”
Page 2
Point 2: "A National clinical informatics career framework that recognises and encourages professional achievement and advancement across the spectrum of one’s career.
Point 3: "Recognition that clinical informaticians are fundamental to the success of data and digital initiatives. This includes leading and informing policies, strategies, engagements, partnerships, stewardship and governance, as well as active participation and representation in design, implementations, delivery, and evaluations of data-driven and digital health technologies.
Point 4: "Clinical scopes of practice that include the safe and effective use of data and information, digital and data-driven technologies, and clinical information systems
Point 5: “A capable health and disability workforce with digital and data literacy and skills. Tertiary and health sector education programmes must include informatics in their curricula, augmented with workplace training and ongoing continuous professional development activity.”
Final Page:
I would suggest using “positive, ongoing digital transformation” rather than “successful digital transformation”. To me, successful implies it is complete.
That’s my first pass through the document. Happy to discuss further if needed and am interested in other people’s view on these points.
Some other questions.
Who is the audience for this document?
What are the timeframes expected from the calls to action?
Thanks @eras - We are aware of a couple of formatting issues that still need to be corrected and also the inclusion of references - these will certainly be included before publication. This is a ‘final draft’ that we’ve posted to ensure CiLN members are happy with the content of the document.
The end of page one looks like it is missing part of a sentence. “Clinical informaticians include registered, self-regulated and non-registered…” Otherwise this is looking great.
This is excellent and there is some great feedback already. I particularly like the broad focus across the health and disability sector with all the stakeholders. I wonder if it is also worth including that the existing legal, professional and organisational requirements must be followed, or upheld.
I do support the position statement , not withstanding the end of page one. I think it is interesting to think of where someone with no formal qualifications become a CI based on experience? I’ve been around for a while, but would not class myself as one.
What a phenomenal amount of work during these times! Thank you. Great read and nothing to add, apart for support for comments above. @michael.hosking, I agree with and appreciate your specific wording suggestions.
No doubt this is a living document, so also support release in next few weeks (e.g., May 2020), with perhaps, this theme being a permanent place on forum for ongoing discussions/suggestions and when time permits, statement can be updated.
I think there need to be a bit more emphasis on user and consumer experience. it a bit like the nothing with out me. Clinical leaders need to be involved so that the electronic work supports the work and workflow of the clinical and at health consumer
Thank you all so much for your feedback on the CiLN Position Statement. @KarenDay and I have just met via Zoom and have edited the document, incorporating most of the suggestions for improvement you have all provided.
We are excited about finalising the Position Statement, and will share it all with you once it is back from the graphic designer and published.
