Happy New Year to all CiLN members! I’ve got a couple of short articles in the mainstream press which are of relevance to us, and thought it might be a nice way to ease into clinical informatics in the New Year.
It is great to hear non-clinicians advocating for clinical informatics. This short article in US online IT media articulates concisely the value we add. The author is a non-clinician who is (slightly incongruently) director of the clinical bit of HIMSS. Thanks to @pkjordan for sharing it with us:
The second article was published in the Guardian (UK) two days ago, about how COVID has changed thinking over there about hospital design; lessons that we in NZ have been largely sheltered from. Their key conclusion is that in order to succeed in this we need:
- A solid electronic health record
- Well developed telehealth
Personally, I would add one more, as it is the key enabler to the other two and one which I have generally unimpressed with in my travels as an itinerant locum anaesthetist around NZ.
- Excellent IT infrastructure (hardware and software)
