Why All Healthcare Systems Should Hire a Clinical Informaticist

Happy New Year to all CiLN members! I’ve got a couple of short articles in the mainstream press which are of relevance to us, and thought it might be a nice way to ease into clinical informatics in the New Year.

It is great to hear non-clinicians advocating for clinical informatics. This short article in US online IT media articulates concisely the value we add. The author is a non-clinician who is (slightly incongruently) director of the clinical bit of HIMSS. Thanks to @pkjordan for sharing it with us:

The second article was published in the Guardian (UK) two days ago, about how COVID has changed thinking over there about hospital design; lessons that we in NZ have been largely sheltered from. Their key conclusion is that in order to succeed in this we need:
  1. A solid electronic health record
  2. Well developed telehealth

Personally, I would add one more, as it is the key enabler to the other two and one which I have generally unimpressed with in my travels as an itinerant locum anaesthetist around NZ.

  1. Excellent IT infrastructure (hardware and software)

Interesting article from the Guardian. Would be great to see this future, and how it would impact on how staff working in this environment. from my P.O.V, could administration and the corporate services be moved out of the hospital environment completely? freeing up valuable space both inside the building and outside in the car park. Our hospitals could become more sustainable from less power usage, reduced traffic impacts on the local area etc.
Dare we say “thank you Covid” for the opportunity to change :grinning:
