When the Windshield Helps Drive the Car, a Repair Isn’t So Simple - The New York Times

Sharing some items i’ve become aware of lately with regard to the wider world of IoT.

  • When is a windscreen not just a windscreen? When it’s suddenly part of your vehicles IoT environment. $$$
  • Landlord requiring a tenant to have electronic door-locks connected to an IoT app - Twitter thread from an infosec specialist is a bit spooky

  • An IoT camera warned a family of an incoming nuclear missile attack, after being compromised.
    • did the family even know the camera was ‘live’ and online?

  • IoT devices will lead to targeted advertising - or worse. What happens when a hacker owns your devices?
  • Connecting your lightbulbs to your wifi may seem like a neat idea, but what are you giving away when you dispose of them later?

I’ll admit i’m not in any particular hurry to move ‘unnecessary’ things to a connected world. Each case on its merits, and review your security posture each time… !

Lesley Carhart’s tweets earlier include a link to her blog which is a little less emotive, and actually quite a good read in terms of modeling your own threats.

Hey Mark, how are you? I’ve been chatting with Eileen at MOH and been invited in to the group. Hope you have been checking out the new Beacon challenges

Lovely to see my FENZ counterparts here, Neil! I troll Beacon periodically and usually don’t hesitate to add my $0.02 as you’ve probably seen!
