We now use the default Jitsi open-source video conferencing for our calls.
Launch a Call
All you need is for all participants to use the same jit.si/Room-ID
link (at the same time) - much like a Teams or Zoom link. You can generate and launch one of these from the eHealth Forum chat, or by setting up an event (read on for details)
we are currently working on some issues traversing high security firewalls (such as Te Whatu Ora and other large organisations), which results in the video and audio feeds not working properly.
To sidestep this problem, simply join the call via an external network (e.g. via your mobile device)
The Room-ID
can be anything at all. You can generate and share the link yourself manually, or use the integrated videocall buttons.
From the Topic / Post Composer
This is great for a planned meeting.
Simply use the events functionality to setup an event. You’ll be given the choice to add a videoconference link as part of the process.
This link will appear in the Events box in your post.
From Chat
This works particularly good for ‘upgrading’ a real-time chat into a videocall, as you know that everyone is present.
Hit the little button in the
+
menu within the chat dialogue, and it will pop the link into the chat.
Background
We started using jit.si with the eHealth Forum quite early on; while it is functional (and free), it is branded and isn’t a super slick experience due to the way it was configured.
In 2022 our friends at provida.nz offered us zui.nz to use, and this was a definite improvement. It used the same Jitsi open source platform, but hosted in Aotearoa NZ and with some clever simplifications / tweaks which markedly improved it. In 2023, they were able to kindly offer us our own whitelabelled subdomain (vc.ehealthforum.nz), which we have used in many contexts successfully.
However, we hit one major snag with this service: it struggles to penetrate the corporate firewalls employed by the major health providers (i.e. DHBs and now Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora). This has proven virtually impossible to overcome, with requests to address it sadly getting lost in the wasteland of middle level IT support.
In view of this, and the ongoing costs of providing the service, we elected to revert to the free (and not as good) jit.si service. If the path through the firewalls opens up (and/or funding becomes available) we’ll review this.
Recording
Yes, you can record jit.si meetings. You’ll find the controls under the three dots on the bottom control bar. This is saved to your computer as a .webm file. It is a Beta feature, but don’t be put off by that - it seems to work well.
Due to file size issues, it is limited to 100 minutes. If you need to go over that, stop the recording, save, and restart.
