Top Ranked Countries In Healthcare Interoperability (Black Book Research)

NZ Ranked 5th at 90.3%

This is quite surprising!!! When confronted by the limitations of our interoperability daily in clinical work it is easy to lose sight of the fact that we are actually doing pretty well on this front.

Sweden (95.4%), New Zealand (90.3%), and Singapore (90.1%) - These countries have achieved high interoperability through national strategies that prioritize data standards, patient-centered platforms, and public-private collaboration. New Zealand’s Health Information Standards Organisation (HISO) and Singapore’s national electronic health record system were specifically highlighted in surveys for their responsiveness and efficiency in clinical workflows.

And a bit shout out to our HISO colleagues - @alastairk, @Evan, @dmeiklejohn to name just 3. Well done, over a long haul too!

But still, we really should be shooting for where Estonia (No 1) is. That (of course) would mean embracing OpenEHR…

I don’t want to denigrate anything that HISO is doing. And congratulations to that team on this global top 5 status…

But (yes, there had to be a but), I think there are deeper cultural reasons why Finland and Estonia do things in a different way with better outcomes. I found this ABC radio documentary about Finnish “comprehensive security” (which no doubt impacts on their ability to deliver at the top of the scale on e-health as well) to be quite informative:

Hi @pkjordan I’m writing an article about this today, if you’re keen to comment, please get in touch

@RMcBeth I’ve just been alerted to the fact that they’ve accidentally put a map of NZ for Norway!

Great to be recognised. We often view ourselves in less favourable light but when objective international assessments are done, we actually come out better on the whole. Well done!

It’s great to see the mention of HISO and its standards for interoperability that have helped keep the data safely flowing for over 20 years. The standards are by and for the sector, and many, many people have contributed to their development and implementation. It’s a challenge to stay current, but SDOs including HL7, SNOMED and ISO are working together more closely now, and through the Global Digital Health Partnership, WHO and Sparked we’re on the right track.

Thanks @RMcBeth … I see you have injected the right notes of caution, with a great quote from @pkjordan , the master of diplomatic understatedness:

“Peter Jordan, HL7 New Zealand secretary, says the top-five ranking surprised him a little and while New Zealand has a lot of technical interoperability, the country still has a way to go.”
