For those keen enough to stay up late, this looks like it will be pretty good.
I’ve added a chat channel to this event, so we can have an NZ-based discussion about it while it is live. If you RSVP to the event, you will be automatically connected to the chat channel.
Well, two is a lot better than zero! We had a great chat while the webinar was going on.
In a nutshell:
The NHS app has progressed significantly over the last few years (and importantly hasn’t died!)
It isn’t that different to our own My Health Record - just with more of the functionality that we get from proprietary patient portals (e.g. managemyhealth.co.nz).
What holds it back are the same type of concerns / complications / issues that we have on the coal face here in NZ:
not enough GPs / GP time to service the needs and wants
vendors slow to the party in terms of interoperability with the NHS app
digital and health literacy
resistance to the idea of patients seeing their records (esp with results which may be something serious)
Overall, it seems a pretty solid idea: a single app for patients to interact with the public health system (and primary care) with. And fix the complete mess that is GP & hospital outpatient appointments admin to boot!
Personally, I’d like to see our Health Ministry (NOT Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora) do the same thing - while legislating that private providers use it as at least a gateway.
Sharks. I fell asleep didn’t I. Thanks for the summary.
I think we can all relook at how we are helping each other or can be helping each other. Like activity looking. Public, private, community etc.
In NZ, we are known for the All Blacks and how by working as a team, we will just sail ahead.
How can we keep whatever momentum we started or start new ones that will help with this narrative. Instead of them and us.. We have a We(NZ) - to serve the patients. Aspirational thought I know. I really believe we can do this.
At some point, we will get the NHS equivalent, if we have the right policy levers to allow for it. At the moment, nothing is shared or trusted beyond the most up to date districts, and primary care data isn’t accessible unless your practice or community provider as a business entity opts to be patient centred.
