Samsung’s Sleep Apnea Feature on Galaxy Watch First of Its Kind Authorized by FDA

We are quite interested in this - wondering what the sensors are that they are using, guessing spo2, resp rate and heart rate?

We were wondering if you could use audio from a phone mic to do this.

Please note this comment from an OSA expert respiratory physician:

@NathanK, I was also thinking of those watches that detect AF, prompt the wearer to seek help and mitigate the risk of cerebral ischaemic events through appropriate prophylaxis.

The actual question might be, is how new technology integrated into existing service delivery models. Where the new technologies are not just hardware like this watch but also those that make the relevant knowledge more accessible.

It would be fascinating to do a study on the costs of the current state, including from undetected or untreated OSA, and whether watches like these change this, particularly with respect to equity.

I think you make a good point Greig. With something like this it supports screening at least I think. There have been a few conversations about our ability to offer the gold standard sleep study to our population and how difficult this is - so anything that allows us to not need to see everyone who might have OSA feels like a win.

The opposite is also true that we may discover an amount of disease that once discovered needs treatment.
