Perinatal care

Hi
I recently attended a Te Whatu Ora update via the DHA and there was a big emphasis on maternal health & first 2000 days.
As a GP I often found this a confusing space with care switching (?, or being shared?) between us and the midwifery & plunket team and communication feeling limited.
I’m wondering what the experience is like from a midwifery perspective - anyone keen to share?
Thanks

have you had anything to do with badger net?

No - thanks for bringing this to my attention. I’m Canterbury-based so perhaps it was a bit slower to come here and i’ve just missed it…
Doesn’t appear to be on community health pathways…

Kia Ora Melanie,
I can speak to this issue from the perspective of the Well Child team (not always Plunket, could be Iwi or other provider also).
There is often significant missing data, or at times no data at all shared easily between hospital systems (including maternal mental health, social work, and birth details) independent midwife records, GP records and Well Child records. Each system stands alone, and it leads to lots of risk for staff doing home visits, as well as risk of clinical issues being missed. There is a manual process for LMC referrals, which is varied by user and region - usually the same referral will be sent to GP and Well Child Provider. There is no clear process to confirm if referrals have been picked up to confirm handover of care between providers.
I think whānau and all providers involved in this space would love to see better integration of systems to improve communication and care. There is so much room for progress in this area.

I’ve not been involved at all.

So Badgernet has been around in NZ since the National Information Clinical Leadership Group early days in 2010 and was hailed as one of the 1st ‘National Solutions’. It was perhaps over customised for NZ use from the UK version and certainly was poorly integrated into the ecosystem. Some notable failures – introduced to South Canterbury then withdrawn about 5+ years ago due to safety concerns.

I know Lara and others visited the UK to see it in action there – and we (NZ) have done a bit of a re-launch starting maybe 3-4 years ago, reverting to the base UK version as I understand. For us, despite Nelson Marlborough being threatened with implementation annually for some time, nothing has happened. I hope and assume that the ‘new’ Badgernet will be well integrated into our existing systems, with, as a minimum, accessible content from within HCS / Health One for the Primary and Community sectors.

@Teresa1 is the main contact, Teresa Omundsen Teresa.Omundsen@TeWhatuOra.govt.nz
She will be able to help with information. The aim is for this to become our main maternal neonate record linked through a shared spine. worth getting in contact.

@Juliet thanks for the correction regarding wellchild providers

@bev Thanks for your thoughts - yes integrated into HCS/HealthOne would be great.

@rachael.page are you able to update us from a HCS/HealthOne perspective?
or @martin.wilson?
