Metadata requirements for projects

An email this morning got me wondering how/if metadata is included in HI/eHealth projects. The drift to standardised metadata requirements is happening now. For example, the US Center for Open Science recently added new metadata fields for all Open Science Foundation projects. These new fields include:

  • Resource type to describe what kind of research material you are sharing (dataset, paper, image, etc)
  • Language of your materials
  • The name of the funders that have funded or supported your research
  • The title of your specific award
  • An identifier for your award

These new fields complement existing metadata for title, description, contributors, license, publication and modification dates. Comprehensive metadata makes work discoverable and reusable.

On our forum I’ve noticed discussions about data, but what about data about the data (metadata)? Is there work underway in NZ about preferred characteristics of (science-) project metadata (as is the case with NIH, NSTC, UNESCO, etc.). I’d guess that ‘guidelines’ will turn into ‘requirements’ sooner rather than later.
