How far along are you with using Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to connect disparate information systems?

@parag - I’d like to understand where you are on this journey, just reading this now, report on RPA

We considered RPA at Police - but dismissed it for a couple of reasons:

  • looked like it would be a nightmare to manage in terms of any tiny tweaks to processes, files, or breaks
  • bakes in process inefficiencies.

Interesting Angela, when you up here next can we discuss further?

I’ve just been at Molesworth St but couldn’t reach anyone for the 1000am meeting…if it was still on. I can drop in tomorrow morning or anytime next week.

Thanks for sharing! I believe it’s at PoC stage at ADHB from what I hear.

HI, I’m new here. This RPA thing is interesting. Where does RPA fit in terms of data exchange using traditional integration systems. Maybe I misunderstand, but to me it looks a bit like a backward step?

I’ve looking into this and here is what seems to be a consistent definition and so far I have seen, it seems to be mostly applied in the area of the business which is uses repetitive transactional processess.

RPA enables the partial or complete automation of a define process, usually found in standard operational processes.

RPA tools are designed to mimic the same “manual” paths taken by a human by using a combination of user interface (UI) interaction or descriptor technologies.

An RPA tool operates by mapping a process for the software “robot” to follow via computer pathways and various data repositories, so RPA can operate in place of a human.

Hi Eileen, yes, I get what you are saying but I keep asking myself “Why?”. Why would you want to imitate what a human does, why not capture the data once and then move it to the systems required via integration tools?
FYI - I’m not trying to sell something, it just intrigues me that automation would take this route.

Do you have a use case you could describe here?

I was thinking about when a service is delivered and you pay the third party for that service, this can be completely automated so no human intereaction is required. The invoice is received, verified against a contract deliverable then paid from the finance system, the software can be programmed to do all these tasks working across the applications.

To imitate a person means that you remove the person from the task, hence the person can contribute to value add tasks, I think that is the attraction for many, but I see what you are saying , why not redefine the model.
