Message from the Chair of HiNZ-NMI
Welcome to our latest newsletter.
One of the things I enjoy most about being part of this community is seeing the incredible work nurses and midwives are doing to improve healthcare through digital innovation. Our recent lunchtime webinar showcased just that, with inspiring speakers sharing practical examples of how they’re making a real difference in their organisations. It was encouraging to see so many people join us and to hear such positive feedback afterwards.
We introduced these lunchtime webinars because we listened to what many of you told us. Not everyone can travel to conferences or attend in-person events, but everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, connect and be inspired by colleagues. It’s been wonderful to see this format helping us reach more nurses and midwives across New Zealand, and we’re planning another webinar in October to continue the conversation.
There are also some fantastic opportunities to connect face-to-face over the coming months. I encourage you to consider the HiNZ Digital Health AI Summit in Christchurch in September, and the annual HiNZ Conference in Auckland in November. Whether you’re just beginning your digital health journey or have years of experience in informatics, these events are a great chance to learn, share ideas and grow your professional network.
As always, I’d love to hear from you. If you have a story to share, an innovative project, or a topic you’d like us to explore in a future webinar or event, please get in touch. Our profession has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and together we can continue to strengthen the nursing and midwifery voice in digital health.

Our exec members…part 3
Yoonah Cho
I am a Lecturer in the School of Nursing at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin and a Registered Nurse with clinical experience in mental health and general surgery. My teaching is informed by practice and focused on preparing nursing students for contemporary healthcare environments.
As digital health becomes central to healthcare delivery and nursing education, I have developed a strong interest in health informatics — an interest that led me to engage with HiNZ and participate in Digital Health Week 2025. My areas of interest include the ethical use of AI, data governance, and AI literacy for nursing students and graduates to support safe, confident, and ethical practice — with a particular focus on how these can be meaningfully embedded into nursing curricula.
I also hold the role of Education Technology Champion within the School of Nursing, supporting colleagues in the effective use of eLearning platforms including Moodle and Lt Kura Cloud.
My future research interest focuses on how AI can be effectively and equitably embedded into undergraduate nursing curricula in New Zealand.
Pippin Morrison
Pippin Morrison is the National Nurse Advisor at Southern Cross Healthcare, where she combines her passion for nursing, leadership and digital health to support high-quality patient care across New Zealand. A registered nurse with a strong background in clinical practice, Pippin works closely with nursing leaders and clinical teams to strengthen nursing practice while helping shape the future of healthcare through digital innovation.
Pippin enjoys serving as a bridge between clinicians, digital teams, and informaticians, helping to ensure healthcare technology is designed with the end user in mind. She is passionate about systems that genuinely make life easier for staff, support better ways of working, and contribute to improved patient care. She is also a strong advocate for equity, culturally safe healthcare, and ensuring nursing voices are heard and valued throughout the digital transformation journey.
Pippin is delighted to be part of the NMI Executive and enjoys working alongside colleagues from across the country to support nurses and midwives to embrace digital health with confidence. She is passionate about sharing ideas, learning from others, and helping build a connected, future-focused nursing profession.

Medtech Explorer
The 2nd MedTech Explorer showcase is coming up on the 27 August 2026.
It was a such a huge success last year that the organisers had to look for a bigger venue to accommodate the growing numbers.
You are warmly invited to attend the MedTech Explorer Showcase – an interactive, community-focused event designed to introduce Pacific communities to the latest developments in medical technology. This showcase is aimed at Pacific communities, clinicians, school students, tertiary students, educators, and community-based organisations interested in exploring how emerging medical technologies are shaping the future of health and wellbeing. It is also a unique opportunity to see, learn about, and engage with medtech innovations.

Digital Health AI Summit - Security and equity by design
Join us in Christchurch for the Digital Health AI Summit, a one-day event bringing together leaders, clinicians, researchers, policy makers, technologists and innovators to explore the theme of ‘security and equity by design’.
Artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare at an unprecedented pace. At the same time, cyber security threats are becoming more sophisticated, regulations are evolving, and expectations around privacy, trust and responsible innovation continue to grow.
How can health organisations keep up, and ensure that AI delivers equitable outcomes?
Through expert presentations, real-world case studies and practical discussions, the summit will look at how organisations can safely and responsibly adopt AI while protecting patient data, strengthening cyber resilience and building trust.
