Message from the Chair of HiNZ-NMI
Welcome to the next edition of the HiNZ-NMI newsletter
This is a bumper issue! There has been a fair amount of things going on and there are loads to read in his newsletter. I had the privilege of attending the IMIA Nursing Informatics conference in Manchester. This was a superb event with loads of knowledge, networking and connections made. The next one is in 4 years in Las Vegas - something to keep in the back of your mind! But, in the meantime, please sign up to attend the HiNZ NI workshop in Hamilton in December. Register now!
Enjoy

HiNZ-NMI Updates and News
IMIA Nursing Informatics Conference, Manchester, England, 28th July - 31st July
Emma Collins
The conference opened on the Sunday afternoon with a welcome from the IMIA NI chair Ann-Kristin Rotegard, Dawn Dowding and Leanne Currie who were the conference Chairs, and Allan Pacey, Dean of BioMedical Sciences at the University of Manchester, the host for the conference. Following that there was an inspirational talk from Nicola Ranger, General Secretary and CE of the UK Royal College of Nursing. Amongst other things she talked about the impact of COVID on the profession, which clearly had a greater impact that what it did in NZ. She also talked about the evolving nature of the nursing profession and the impact digital health will have.
The opening keynote for the conference was delivered by Pamela Cipriano, the President of the International Council of Nurses, and was a highlight for me. She talked about digital nursing transforming global health and highlighted the work that the ICN does with the WHO. She acknowledged the physician centric space we work in and asked us all not to be passive users of technology as we are innovators and leaders. She then discussed the ICN position statement - Digital transformation and Nursing Practice. A worthwhile read.
Monday morning opened with a panel of leaders in Nursing Informatics from all 4 countries in the UK. They talked about their leadership journey into this area of nursing and encouraged us to work collaboratively.
Following this there were many sessions throughout Monday and Tuesday that I attended. The most valuable were the sessions on AI. Nurses are using AI in healthcare delivery as well as in education. There are studies being undertaken where chat GPT is being explored as well as other AI tools. The panel presentation on AI explored how AI is being used in health services management, predictive medicine, patient data and diagnostics and clinical decision making. Whilst AI is not a new tool, we are all needing to understand it better to keep up to date, not just with the technology but also with the patients we are caring for.
The closing keynotes stimulated us in reflection. From health equity and artificial intelligence, to data-driven evidence for the impact of climate change on health outcomes. This conference had it all.

Leadership in Nursing
There has been a significant amount of dialogue recently regarding the importance of leadership in Nursing. Too often nurses are not at the table when decisions are being made which affects the care we can then give to our patients. Whilst this is not strictly a digital health topic, it is relevant to all areas of nursing practice. Please read these recent letters and articles on the topic.
