Message from the Chair of HiNZ-NMI

Welcome to the next edition of the HiNZ-NMI newsletter

Welcome to the first newsletter for 2024. Another busy year ahead for us all, flying the flag for digital health and progressing this discipline in Nursing. Research is one of the ways in which we can increase our knowledge and understanding of digital health. This newsletter has invites to research studies for you to consider, as well as some reading. We are always interested in reading about what you have written about. If you have written something regarding informatics and digital health, we would love to hear from you.
Enjoy this edition of the newsletter.

HiNZ-NMI Updates and News

Disability and Digital Health

This piece by Sally Britnell @Srgurr highlights the personal struggles she has had, as someone living with dual sensory loss. In this narrative she shares her experience as a staff nurse, an academic and a patient, and then addresses these challenges in relation to digital health. An inspiring and thought-provoking piece.

Request for assistance in research study

Lisa Reid is a a PhD candidate at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Flinders University, South Australia. She is a Registered Nurse and the chief investigator for the study titled:

Developing a distinct body of knowledge on Nursing Informatics: A mixed-methods study

This project is supported by Flinders University, Office of Graduate Research and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The project has been approved by Flinders University’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC: 2156).

This study will address an identified knowledge gap by adding to the body of knowledge on Nursing Informatics and defining Nursing Informatics as a field. This knowledge map will be used to inform undergraduate nursing curricula development and provide a blueprint for the development of Nursing Informatics competencies which align with the graduate attributes for specific tertiary institutions.

Benefits of the study

The sharing of your experiences will be invaluable in addressing the current deficits understanding of Nursing Informatics and will be used to shape undergraduate Nurse education and continual professional development education for Nurses in regard to Nursing Informatics.

Inclusion criteria

You are eligible to participate in this study, if you are:

  • A Nurse Informatician
  • An expert in Nursing Informatics
  • Or a Nurse educator

Participant involvement and potential risks

If you agree to participate in the research study, you will be asked to:

  • Complete a maximum of four rounds of questionnaires regarding your understanding and experiences of nursing informatics
  • There will be accompanying structured interviews which will take no more than 60 minutes and participation is entirely voluntary.

If you decide to participate or have further questions

Please find attached the information and consent form.
HREC - Information and Consent Form - Delphi Study.docx (173.2 KB)

If keen to be involved, please complete, sign and return this form to Lisa

Alternatively, if you have further questions, Lisa would value the opportunity to further discuss the study with you via phone at a time that suits you. If you are amenable to this, please contact me either at lisa.reid@flinders.edu.au or via phone on +61434676142.

Workforce Development

Following discussions at DWH in 2023, Karen Shaw @karenshaw set up a survey to gauge peoples ideas around workforce development. The survey is accompanied by a discussion. It is hoping that these surveys and subsequent discussions will lead to future work by informatics leaders to develop our workforce.
You can have your say and contribute to the discussion on these links below:

Are you using an electronic health record?

An opportunity to participate in research about terminology in electronic health records via a survey.

The Netherlands is currently undergoing a transition to shift from a variety of terminologies in healthcare documentation to a unified terminology, facilitated through SNOMED. This transition is being carried out incrementally in collaboration with IT suppliers, sector, and professional organizations, as well as healthcare professionals.

One of the focal points of this transition is the nursing care plan, encompassing nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes. In order to initiate a thorough transition, we aim to:

  • Gain insights into the implementation and usage of terminologies related to the nursing care plan in electronic health records in other countries.
  • Understand the approach and status of the implementation of these terminologies in the electronic health records of other countries.

Through these insights, we hope to draw an international comparison with the situation in the Netherlands. Understanding challenges faced by other countries will enable us to better identify potential obstacles and propose effective solutions.

To achieve this, we have developed a brief questionnaire, taking a maximum of 10 minutes to complete. You can fill it out at a time that suits you best. Your assistance in completing the survey would be greatly appreciated.

If you are not the appropriate person, we kindly ask you to forward this email to someone knowledgeable about terminology implementation.

At the end of the questionnaire, you can also indicate whether you would like to receive updates on the research conclusions via email.

Can we count on your support? We truly appreciate your time and assistance. The questionnaire will automatically open when you click on Questionnaire.

If the questionnaire does not open automatically, please use another browser, such as ‘Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Microsoft Edge,’ and paste the following link:
