Entry for nurses into Health Informatics

Kia ora,

I am interested to know about the skills and/or qualifications required for nurses to work as Nurse Informatician in New Zealand.

Kia ora Arshi. There are various course available and can be eligible for hwnz funding Main issue is where to practice as we don’t have a career framework or may roles within nursing so it often means a move into project management a couple of te whatu ora providers have go some systems in place however. Happy to chat DM me your details and we can catch up.

Hi All. Just catching up. I have struggled to move from Nursing, it’s about 4 years now, into NI as I cannot afford to attend University again. I had been advised of the certification by CHIA, from https://digitalhealth.org.au but I can’t find the actual link now. I would certainly like to help other Nurses navigate the pathway into NI.

Kia ora Kate,

Thanks for replying. I was thinking about Otago and Auckland university course, however, I found out about some posts saying they are not actually very relevant in getting you NI role as yet. So being a full-time professional, I find it hard to invest time and money if there is no clear career pathway. Any suggestion will be helpful.

Hi Rincy,

Thanks for reaching out. How did you find the Digital health course and where did you do it? Do you think it can land you in any NI role?

That would be awesome

Kia ora Becky, I have checked this CHIA link. It talks about exam and certification but not available courses to get certified or be eligible to sit the certification exam.

I am based in Christchurch

Happy to join in the discussion @kate as several of my grads from the MHSM at Massey Uni have moved into clinical Informatics roles recently.

Cheers Inga

Hi Kate
A group session/zoom to brainstorm and chat about these topics/issues is a great idea.
Maybe put up a poll in here to suggest a date and time, and we can go from there. Once we have a date set we can advertise it widely as I am sure there are others who are in the same boat!

I’d be keen to join the session. My journey as a nurse working in a full time Informatics role evolved somewhat backwards I.e. the organisation I work for built the role around work I was already doing. Happy to contribute to the discussion

Hi there,

I’m interested in this - I have just finished the Post Grad Dip in Digital Health with Otago.

I’m not a nurse, but a background as Operating Department Practitioner and some leadership roles in theatre aswell as working in NHS improvement. I’m finding it hard to understand where my skills fit - I can see how/where but the roles don’t seem to be there, especially in Hospitals. (I’m not currently working in healthcare).

Thanks
Katrina

Kia ora all, Lets see if we can find a date. I know it might seem a long way away but i have some holiday as I am sure others do. I have put an hour and a half as I don’t want to limit us and we can do some proper introductions. However fi we only use 30 minutes that is ok. Better to get time back. @emma.collins will you share on NSIG page. Please let me know if this does not work

@Arshi you pay your money and then go through the book and any other resources and sit the exam when you are ready.

Hi everyone. I am keen to know more as well. This will be really helpful. I am thinking of enrolling for Diploma in digital health sciences (Auckland Uni) soon. I am not sure if this is the right pathway but this course and a similar course from Otago uni were the only courses, I could find that were somewhat related to informatics.

My background is ICU nurse and Flight nurse previously, now I am a Quality coordinator at Te Whatu Ora Whanganui. I developed an interest in informatics after starting my role as Quality coordinator.
Cheers

Same here, I have been considering a similar role for some time. The thought of doing CHIA cert without any experience in a similar role seemed like putting the cart first… I currently work as an Acnm. I recently spoke to a Health Analyst and it seems jobs could be advertised differently.

please see vote above. We are trying to to pull a little discussion group together to share ideas and experience.
