Does anyone have any advice about the NIR, NIS, and COVID?

Excuse me if this is off topic for this group - but as a new participant in Yammer I didn’t want to start another group, and I’m sure that the members here will have some collective knowledge on the National Immunisation Register (NIR), and its replacement, the National Immunisation System (NIS)… which has been announced as ready by Minister for COVID-19 Response Chris Hipkins, for when COVID vaccination starts.

Our cloud-based Health product lines have a number of pre-built connectors to other IT systems of interest - in particular using FHIR where available. We are interested in connecting to NIR and/or NIS for a range of vaccination registrations, from remote childhood vaccine administration, to COVID vaccines administered in Tertiary Hospitals and GP clinics.

Does anyone have any advice about whether we should focus on interactions with NIS only, or whether registering non-COVID immunisations with NIR will still be the correct thing to do in parallel.

Any references to documentation of interaction/integration mechanisms would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Keith

Keith, ross.maclennan@health.govt.nz is the architecture lead for the COVID immunisation register and may be able to help

Thanks Alastair Kenworthy, I’ll get in touch with Ross.

I found the documentation for the existing NIRhttps://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/preventative-health-wellness/immunisation/national-immunisation-register on the MoH web site, and we’ve been talking to DHBs and PHOs who are attempting to integrate with it for new outreach childhood immunisation programmes in disadvantaged and remote communities. But I assume because the NIS is new, and “in-house” for the COVID vaccine roll-out, there’s no equivalent data interchange framework for the NIS (yet), or that it’s being shared only with COVID immunisation delivery partners. Ross may be able to give me some insight.

I don’t work directly with this, but sit near those who do work with this at a PHO. I think that a single source for all vaccinations that is up to date would be ideal.

Keith Duddy, PM me if you want to connect with my colleagues for more user feedback.

Thanks Martin Frauenstein and Susanne Ames for the extra information. Great to know who’s in those positions, as Identity is also a key area of interest for our DHB clients. I might not bother Will Kehayioff right now, as I gather the vaccinations start on Monday. We are looking at the medium term…so it can wait a few weeks until the programme is hopefully running smoothly (and real data entry in happening to the NIS).

Susanne Ames - thanks, I’ll connect once we have had initial workshops at the BoP DHB to share findings.
