December Newsletter

Message from the Chair of HiNZ-NMI

Welcome to the final edition of the HiNZ-NMI newsletter for 2023.

NMI 2023

Digital health week has recently concluded. If you were fortunate to attend this event, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. If you have never been before- please look to attend next year if you can. I highly recommend. There were a number of great themes that came out through the week. Notebly, the data and digital team at te Whatu Ora is becoming clear, as well as their vision for the future. I am excited to see where this goes. There were a number of other conversations about workflow, data collection and analysis, patient and whanau at the center of what we do, and of course, AI. I came away energized and excited.
This newsletter is full! I hope you enjoy reading it and have a happy and safe festive season.

The new look HiNZ NMI Executive

At our recent Annual ‘Group’ Meeting we said farewell to some longstanding exec members.
Thank you Michelle Honey, Deb Boyd, and Angela de Zwart for all the time, energy and commitment you have given the HiNZ NMI group. You will be missed - and are welcome back on the exec anytime!

We are fortunate to have three amazing people join the exec. Welcome Carey, Jen and Ana! We look forward to having you on the exec and working with you to connect nurses and midwives in digital health. You can read more about our new exec members below.

Carey Campbell @carey

With 30+ years of health practice under her belt, Carey is proud to be a NZ registered nurse who has worked in both the NZ public and private sector. Her current role with Orion Health – a global health IT software company founded in NZ – uses her clinical and professional skills to ensure technology solutions are fit for purpose with a focus on enhancing patient and clinician experience, health equity, practice efficiency and better health outcomes.

Her previous experience as the Director of Nursing of a network of private surgical hospitals saw her leading the digital transformation needed to move from a fully paper clinical record to a mobile-responsive digital care record used by clinicians every day for every patient.

Carey is excited to join the Executive and work alongside like-minded health professionals to further raise nursing’s profile and involvement within the digital health community.

Jen Chesbrough @JenChes

Ko Ngāti Kahu te iwi, ko Jen Chesbrough toko ingoa. I’m currently seconded to the Tū Pono Āroha project, as a Equity and Change lead. The project is working on the new PAS called TrakCare for go live in mid 2024 at Te Toka Tumai. I have worked as a nurse for 20 years. The last 10 years as a CNS with the NZ Liver Transplant Service. I live in Auckland with my husband and two children. I’m currently training to the 50km Oxfam walk in March.

Ana Zafra @Ana

Ana is a dedicated cardiac and critical care nurse with a decade of experience in the field. She is currently working as a programme consultant for the Safe Staffing Healthy Workplaces Unit, where they focus on ensuring optimal staffing levels to match demand based on best available data.
Her commitment to advancing the nursing profession led her to co-found the Nursing and Midwifery Informatics Group in Waikato district alongside Kate Yeo. She is deeply passionate about digital enablement and enhancing data literacy among frontline staff, believing firmly in the power of technology to transform healthcare.

Robyn Carr Cup awarded to Deb Boyd

The Robyn Carr Cup for Excellence in Nursing Informatics is awarded annually at the eHealth Nursing & Midwifery event which is included as a part of the pinnacle HiNZ event for the year- the Digital Health Week. The eHealth Nursing & Midwifery event provides the perfect opportunity for the recipient of this award to be recognised nationally by their peers. This award recognises sustained support of nursing and midwifery informatics in New Zealand and acknowledges the central role nurses and midwives have had, and continue to have, in supporting the profession, each other and the wider interests of the health informatics community.
Deb has been a steadfast supporter to the NMI group for a number of years and has participated the NMI Executive meetings acting as a bridge between the HiNZ Board and NMI Executive. One of Deb’s notable contributions has been her writing for newsletters and sharing at an eHealth Nursing and Midwifery Workshop about how the Nursing Council Competencies can be met from a clinical informatics perspective. Deb has served on the HiNZ Board since 2016 and has recently been appointed as Chair after a term as Deputy Chair. In addition, Deb has been part of the Clinical Reference group for Hira. In her many roles, including Chief Executive Officer of Auckland Eye and more recently Ormiston Hospital, Deb has been a strong advocate for nurses as well as patients.

Congratulations Deb!

NMI collaboration on the Te Pūkenga Unified Bachelor of Nursing curriculum.

Te Pukenga

Members of the NMI executive were approached to assist with the planning and development of resources for a unified curriculum to be rolled out across 13 ITP (Institutes of Technology and polytechnics) delivery sites. This is the first time a national ITP based curriculum will be delivered, bringing together 13 individual degree programs into one national degree.
NMI originally provided consultative feedback on the original curriculum and graduate profiles in 2022 which strengthened the visibility of nursing informatics / digital health in the overarching document.
Work to date has been primarily undertaken by Roseanne Sadd, (Te Pukenga / Toi Ohomai; NMI exec) liaising with members of the executive group. NMI members have provided feedback and resources suitable for undergraduate teaching. This work is guided by the 2018 Guidelines: Informatics for nurses entering practice (Honey, M., Collins, E. & Britnell, S.).
At this time the curriculum is awaiting accreditation (anticipated early 2024) and timeframes for delivery yet to be finalised but expected mid 2024 / early 2025.

Upcoming Events

You are invited to participate in a global nursing informatics webinar on Thursday 14th December at 0800 NZT and repeated on Thursday 14th December at 6:30pm NZT.

The webinar has two perspectives and will include time for questions and discussion.

  1. Nurses use of electronic patient records - The Finnish Experience - Hear about the recent survey undertaken in Finland on the use of EPRs by nurses and the implications for nursing informatics practice
  2. Demonstrating the impact of nursing - Data is a key fundamental for now and the future. Let’s discuss the importance of nursing data for demonstrating the value of nursing practice and its outcomes, and for research and global comparisons. One of the key factors for effective nursing data is standardised nursing terminologies in your electronic patient records. So let’s hear about the benefits and the barriers and what would you recommend for the future.

To join: You will receive a Teams Invitation. An accept of the invitation means you are joining the webinar. You can pass the invitation on to your colleagues/those who may be interested and/or contact ann.kristin.rotegard@varhealthcare.com to get the invitation directly.

This global seminar is hosted by the IMIA NI Practice Advisory Panel and led by Ulla-Mari Kinnunen and Robyn Cook.
