Message from the Chair of HiNZ-NMI

Welcome to the next edition of the HiNZ-NMI newsletter!

In July, I was fortunate enough to attend MedInfo in Sydney. This was a fantastic event (not as good as the HiNZ event you will see in Hamilton in November of course…) and there was some enlightening conversations held. There is a report on this event in this newsletter. As with these events, it is the connections and the networks that are the highlight. I thoroughly enjoyed being in a space for a number of days with like-minded people, chatting about common interests. I look forward to doing more of that in November.
Enjoy this latest edition.

Software that’s Making a Difference

Deb Boyd (@debboyd)

I too attended the Nursing Informatics Sessions at Medinfo and was impressed with the way the day was structured. The morning session had keynotes speaking with a focus on the importance of Quality Standards being embedded into all data and digital activities. A comment was made that in terms of digital maturity the USA is 10 years ahead of the UK, so it’s not hard to understand how far behind New Zealand is. Another comment was that in 10 years’ time we won’t be talking about digital professionalism as it will be so embedded in our practice.

The afternoon session had all attendees put into “tour groups” and we moved around presentations from various vendors and sponsors. Some of the presentations included an interesting VR solution for teaching emergency management, an antenatal care solution (Eve), a communications solution that had demonstrated remarkable improvement in management of calls in a clinical setting developed by FiveP. There was also a wonderful software solution that used AI to track wound healing (currently in use in Midcentral) and was previously featured in eHealth News.
