It is wonderful to see that the significant aged residential care (ARC) sector on the SI now has proper access to it - with a web based solution on the way to make it even more accessible. Excellent work, @RebeccaM!

The HCS / HeathOne combo have been the SI’s defacto shared care record for a while now, with clinical staff outside of the DHB having to find workarounds in order to access it.

Surely the next one to target is the private healthcare sector, using a similar approach. This seems to be underway already, as I can now access HCS via Mercy Dunedin PCs.

How are things progressing on these fronts in other parts of the country?

This is indeed very welcome news and something I can look forward to when I enter an ARC facility.

It would certainly be fantastic news if and when I could access my own HealthOne EHRs on line!!
My GP practice offers a MMH portal and while it is useful for Telehealth it lacks historic EHRs.
Should we be seeing Enterprise Architecture diagrams and IT system plans for the SI and NI soon?

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for your message.

It has been an excellent collaborative project of which the HCS/Health one teams have been instrumental.

With regards to private health care, in Canterbury some of our private facilities do have access to HCS and the web-based solution will help to enable easier access for other services including NGO, private sectors etc.

I am heavily involved in a number of conversations and work around electronic shared care records. We are in the early stage of doing a stocktake of what solutions are being used across the country, we have been tasked with providing recommendations by June 2023.

Happy to chat more if you are interested.

Kind regards

I think this is a great development - although there is still a lot of work to be done to present information in a user-friendly way and to find a balance between not missing crucial information and avoiding overload as well. Many ethical questions and also data sovereignty questions have not been answered yet. In any case, any ideas on how this aligns with the Hira plans? Or not?

Well, we’d all (rather than just me personally) be delighted to know more about the current status of this and where we are going!

It is a super important first step! First get everything connected (at least partially) and then work towards getting the UX, nitty gritty about ethics, data sovereignty, and other stuff right.

While we don’t want to make any monumental errors with that stuff when joining things up, we also can’t afford to wait the years it would take for us to get that all aligned nicely. The real world is just too messy and resource constrained!!

Hm, that is the way things have been done the past 20-30 years (maybe longer) - let’s get it to work first, then deal with the ethics, data questions, and other impact afterwards. I think we can improve outcomes by flipping that model around. Tech is not created in a vacuum anyway, the historical and social context matter. So I’d say, let’s not leave all of that as an afterthought, but try to develop sound technology to start with, within a multidisciplinary team, and then continue to evaluate its effects along its lifespan. I don’t see how else we can get a good shot at avoiding monumental errors…

Great stuff @RMcBeth

HealthOne did a great job getting ARC facilities onboard. It was great working with Rachael and her team. I’m happy that some of the private Allied health clinicians have access in Canterbury and that’s just the start!

Exciting times to come. Well done @rachael.page and team. :clap:t2:
