Primary Care Dataset: update? role in new system?

Kia ora koutou-

As conversations are evolving, I’m personally interested in the primary care space and so was wondering how to find out an update on the Primary Care Dataset project and what might be happening with this going forward?

@richard.medlicott, the last I was aware about this was in discussion with you . . . albeit some years ago!

There was discussion about ‘data-driven’ intelligence, at a national level, and so I asked what primary healthcare data might be included in this, and the person I was speaking to, wasn’t sure. This was part of a conversation around Quality Improvement (as distinct from Quality Assurance, which is done via the Cornerstone RNZCGP process for General Practice). Capacity and resourcing for actual QI is very patchy around the country, so I’m personally interested as to how this might be addressed in this new system, while ensuring primary healthcare is integral to that.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received

Kia ora Emily - is this project intending to include the vast amounts of data about aged care services which is held in benchmarking and aged care organisations databases?

wouldn’t that be amazing?!?!

I don’t know . . information on ‘Primary Care Data’ when I google for NZ, on .govt site is very old. So, hence posting this topic . . . who does know anything about whether a Primary Care Dataset project still exists? If not, why not?

At minimum, a dataset for General Practice data?

Hi Emily. Darren Douglass and / or Stephen Lavery from the Ministry of Health should be able to assist.

Happy to provide an update on this in the context of Hira. Becky George is supporting us on Hira and she will also have a perspective. Let me know what time would work for you.

Hi @emily.gill
A sad story of great intent, a lot of work, excellent proposals and in the end different expectations regarding funding.
We had a very good review panel, whittled about 20 proposals down to two over a long summer. They went and did more work and polishing. We had a large number of PHOs on side. We had justifiable expectations IMHO from the ministry regarding a shred of funding that in the end fell flat, despite reassurances at a very high level. Death by business case for a spend that is about 1% of what has been proposed for health IT spending in the latest budget round. I’m getting pretty cynical as I get older. We could have had a brilliant thing for that 1%, and we would have it mature and functioning now. Instead we have a promise of big bucks to be spent - but it will take years and be bogged down by endless committees and stakeholder meetings. Sigh…

How I hope some of all that work can be resurrected with these upcoming changes . . . surely, now is the time of possibilities! Thanks for the update . . .

In response to queries about an update on Primary Care data, thank you @BeckyGeorge (interim clinical director Hira) and @darren.douglass (GM Digital strategy & Investment, Data & Digital, MoH) for the chat today that provided the following update:

Subject to Cabinet’s approval of the business case, the Hira project intends to commence stakeholder engagement which will include both primary care and patient/consumer perspectives.
