Portable "tricorder" device spots cancer or heart attack biomarkers in minutes

Researchers at the University of Glasgow have developed a small handheld device that can scan for biomarkers to quickly and easily diagnose people with certain diseases and illnesses.

We’re getting closer to Bones’ scanner!

Inspired (as always) by Star Trek’s tricorder, the new “multicorder” is designed to help doctors track illness from just about anywhere.”]

Interesting. I wonder what the accuracy is and if they have trialed it.

Apart from accuracy, a point already made by Diana, I would be interested to know what they intend to do with collected data – are they intending to use it for research into biomarkers (with the potential for commercial gain)? Increasingly, in research applications before HDECs, we see pharmaceutical companies wanting to do biomarker testing on participants which relate not only to the study in question, but also to future unspecified research. Other ethical issues might also arise in terms of sufficiency of evidence of the predictive ability of various biomarkers.
