Health Informatics Research

G’day, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to attend the hui last week. I’m at the AMIA (Informatics Summit) which focuses on Informatics research, in San Francisco. I’m lucky enough to be presenting a paper. If there are fellow kiwis here, I would be keen to meet-up. And/or, does anyone have an opinion about how/whether there’s a role to connect with the AMIA organisation? Apparently there are 15 countries represented here, even though it’s a heavily US oriented conference. Cheers, emily

Hi Emily. AMIA is a member of IMIA and Health Informatics NZ (HiNZ) is also a member of IMIA so we have some crossovers.

Thanks, Karen. Still figuring out the global network layers of informatics  Within the IMIA, if you have time to respond, is research a small or big part of the wider informatics network? Is there ‘the largest’ research-focused informatics conference in the world? Or, is research generally a part of all informatic meetings? Thanks for helping me learn. Cheers, emily

Hi Emily,

Generally research is part of all health informatics conferences, although some conferences focus on vendors, e.g. HIC and others on
research, e.g. Medinfo. ‘The’ global research conference in health informatics research is Medinfo and it happens every second year. There are lots of other research conferences I could tell you about if you want to know about them.

Super helpful. Thank you! Just looked up MedInfo and this year is Lyons, France . . . then next time (2021), Sydney. No doubt the kiwi contingency will be there

Yep, of course. HiNZ put in a bid for 2021 but HISA outbid us, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Another big conference in terms
of sheer size is the HIMSS suite of conferences. They focus more on vendors but some research does see the light of day there.

Hi Emily
IMIA has always had a strong academic focus with many participants in Academia where as HIMSS has had a strong vendor focus. IMIA has a number of working groups and special interest groups, the largest of which is the Nursing Informatics group (IMIA-NI). Until earlier this year I was the NZ rep to IMIA-NI and chair the IMIA-NI board and general assembly at one stage. I am an honorary member of IMIA-NI now. I am also a founding Fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI). I have many international colleagues who attend AMIA and HIMSS each year. I am happy to discuss the international groups with you on your return from AMIA.

Lucy, am I correct in assuming the IMIA conference is Medinfo?

I’ve posted MedInfo as an event:

@KarenDay, I’m guessing that you would recommend that I go to it since it is academic and all - and just across the Euro-ditch. Ok, ok, have been meaning to get to Paris anyway.

@KarenDay Yes the IMIA conference is called MedInfo with the year after it e.g. MedInfo2019. The IMIA-NI conference is called NI with the year after it e.g. NZ hosted NI2000.
The IMIA Asia Pacific region conference is APAMI. The IMIA European region conference is EFMI.

Good idea to go Nathan!
