Health and Disability review

Kia ora Koutou, for those that haven’t had a look at this yet I would encourage you to do so https://dpmc.govt.nz/our-business-units/transition-unit

I was unaware that a transition unit has been set up to bring the health and disability review findings into action. Worthy of discussion and thought I think. A high level plan will be delivered next month and then the mahi will start in June.

I would be interested in hearing others thoughts as to how health informatics can play a major role in our health reforms.

I think it is critical that health informatics/digital health has a major role, especially given the role digital health has in the recommendations. The transition unit is fairly high level but if we are not in at the start we will have difficulty later on.

The transition unit’s brief is “developing the policy response and design of the system operating model, providing advice on the establishment of new entities and legislative change, and producing an overall implementation plan and work programme”.

I think for a start asking who is part of the transition unit and seeing if we are adequately represented, and if not then asking for that.

Another option might be a CiLN discussion paper to the transition unit.

I agree that we should have a presence in the transition unit and that CiLN should start creating discussion documents, not only for the transition unit but to trigger debate and thoughtful action among those affected by the review results. Lots of work to be done. The trick is to identify our role and work it to the best of our abilities.

Who will take on the task of finding out who’s on the transition unit’s team and make some initial connections?

@alex - I recall you mentioning the Transition Unit to me the other day. What can you share with us about it? It all seems a bit cloak and daggers, and it would be really helpful for us in the sector to know a bit more about what they are up to before a plan is sprung up and imposed upon us.

The transition team is led by Stephen McKernan and is being run out of the Office of the DPMC https://www.nzdoctor.co.nz/article/undoctored/stephen-mckernan-takes-key-role-health-reforms-0

This first set of recommendations are being presented to Cabinet in March, and are based off the work from the Health and Disability System review that many of us contributed to through the engagement process.

I understand (and am reasonably confident) that health/clinical informatics will have a pivotal role to play in new data and digital initiatives from my meetings with the transition team (through my work on the Data and Information Strategy).

I spoke with Emily Mailes who was terrific, @alex kindly put me on to her. I’ve asked Emily to come and talk with the NZTLG at our next meeting and she seems very happy to do so. Maybe getting her along to an advisory meeting would be good??

Hi @Ruth Large. Thanks for this. Yes, I think it’s a good idea to get Emily Mailes to come and talk to us in the advisory meeting. Up to @alex and Nathan as chairs to commit to this.

This would be worthwhile, I support it if @alex is willing to make the arrangements as she has the relationship with Emily.

But I do wonder if perhaps we should look at a way of sharing her thoughts with the wider CiLN community rather than our little rarified group. Perhaps a webinar would be better?

I like the transparency of the approach of bringing Emily into the fold of the whole CiLN. We might frighten her away though if >400 people join the webinar and we behave in our usual rabble way.

How about we use the ‘reverse funnel approach’ and get Emily to talk to the advisory group first and then we arrange a webinar with the wider membership?

Hi all. Sorry late to the conversation. The transition unit is providing guidance to the minister based on what the recommendations from HDSR report mean the reality may look like.
They are not looking for consultation at this stage as thar happened already in the HDSR. However it would be helpful to gain thoughts here on what people thought of the HDSR recommendations? What they were happy with? Disappointed? Did the clinical Informatics voice of feedback come through?
I am happy to see if Emily would want to do a webinar at some stage
