Has anyone come across what semantic technologies and informatics can provide in the New Zealand context?

Yes - Precision Driven Health is supporting a research project which has developed semantic search over patient documents, where clinicians can search for a term like “heart attack” and find “MI” etc; SNOMED codes are used as the basis for the linkage. This research is in a late proof-of-concept stage, moving into a production environment for use in a limited trial in Waitemata DHB and Canterbury DHB which should be complete about one year from now.

One of the un-sexy things about doing this kind of great research is the amount of effort needed on the technical side, in this case to enable search over lots of documents stored in lots of different places. This is a big technical challenge - the semantics part is easier by comparison.
