Connected tech manufacturers told to implement security by design

Whilst I would dearly love to see some reasonable security targets mandated by Government, I fear we’re too small a market to make serious waves; we already know how ineffective the restrictions on the importing of illegal RF transmission kit is (Trademe have published a useful list of applicable laws, because of how rampant breaches were (and how often sellers have been operating illegally without knowing it) - https://www.trademe.co.nz/trust-safety/radiocommunications-devices-rules-and-responsibilities/) I suspect that if laws or regulations were set down to mandate a security standard, they’d be ignored (or unpoliced) just as readily.
The best thing we can do is vote with our feet / our dollars; don’t purchase devices known to have poor security arrangements, or from vendors known to take shortcuts with security.
And anyone providing ‘official’ services, in the health sector or elsewhere, will of course be considering the security of their IT systems and the privacy of their patients when they procure, I assume
