Cynically - this is an effort by a trade organization to get something to indicate, like professional societies, that they are self-regulating, to avoid external (e.g. governmental) oversight. This is a pretty sweet space - health care-level profits, with IT-style regulation (e.g. essentially none) - and I think similar to Google, MS, FB - they want to appear to be playing nice, and may even wish to appear to work with government for external regulation, as long as they have lobbyists helping to write those regulations. Have you read the US Military AI regulations published last week - essentially so toothless that while something is on paper, nothing is really enforceable. Bring on the killer autonomous robots …
