Hi Richard, we are going mobile app based with wabba and worked hard to get the authorisations right and break glass. Not quite up and running outside of our medical imaging team but the whole point is to go mobile…

Interesting. How does it manage images on the local device. This is one of the advantages of CELO that images don’t have persistence on the local device or sync to device clouds (eg ICloud for photos)

Cheers

Richard

Also I have had a lot of conversations with our ISG and Med Ills on how Wabba manages permissions so happy to share that as is helpful.

In Primary Care sa wee Christchurch company created and excellent app for phone that uploads to medtch (and other PMS as well I think).
Stores at local Medtech host, nothing left on the phone.

It’s a brilliant bit of kit

Also in primary care: we are loading our photos directly into our PMS [Indici](https://www.indici.co.nz/) - we scan a QR code which opens the patient record in your phone browser - then you can take the photo(s) and that loads the image directly into a photo gallery in the patient record. Avoids saving the photo anywhere else (and hence having to delete it).

Since indici is browser based it can be viewed on a mobile device but most users are accessing from larger devices (eg laptop, surface) rather than from a phone - so the user interface at that level hasn’t really been exercised. If it was something that was needed I do think the developers would work it out though

I don’t know if it uses the [DICOM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DICOM) format however

As per previous comments we are using CM3 which is proving to be an interesting implementation taking a bit of time. It does include a consent module and is viewable on browser and mobile so once we get it going well I think it’s going to be great.

Hi Damon,

Great thread. It’s been a while since the original post, but the five requirements you outlined are still very relevant. Hospitals and clinics are still trying to move staff away from WhatsApp and personal camera rolls for clinical photos.

On your [DICOM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DICOM) question: [DICOM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DICOM) makes sense for radiology, but it can be unnecessarily heavy for standard clinical images such as wound or dermatology photos. It can also add clutter to the PACS and make it harder for clinicians who just need to quickly view an image.

For non-radiology images, we’ve found that using standard JPG or PNG files, with HL7 or FHIR integration into the EMR or clinical portal, is often a simpler and faster approach.

Your fourth requirement is particularly important. To stop people using WhatsApp or their phone camera, the approved option needs to be just as easy to use. It also needs to prevent images from being saved to the device’s camera roll or synced to personal cloud storage.

We came across the same issue in the ANZ market, which led our team to build CIM (Clinical Image Management).

It allows clinicians to:

- Scan a patient’s wristband or barcode to confirm their record.
- Capture photos and consent within the app, without saving anything to the camera roll or iCloud.
- Automatically send the images and relevant details to the clinical record.
- Remove the local copy from the device once the upload is complete.

There’s also a side-by-side comparison feature for tracking wound healing or treatment progress over time.

Not sure whether you’re still looking into this, but I’d be happy to share how clinics and hospitals in the region are using it to address the issues you raised

Yeah, it feels like we haven’t made a lot of progress over the last decade, eh?

HI - I know in NSW we have integrated Teams photo sharing with the Fujifilm VNA really successfully. I don’t have the technical details but could put you in touch with the right team.

If you are Wellington based, you could look at using the Synapse Synchronicity back end VNA capabilities? Synchronicity has been in place there for a few years and the VNA component of it could meet your needs. I’m not the SME but could connect you to the right team 🙂
