CiLN award proposal - please vote!

CiLN is considering introducing an award called the Clinical Informatics Leadership Award to recognise the achievements of a clinician working in digital health in New Zealand.

Current thinking is that:

To be eligible for the award you must be a:

  • Member of the Clinical Informatics Leadership Network
  • Registered Health Professional (or equivalent)
  • Residing in NZ and employed in the NZ health sector

You can nominate yourself or others.

All submissions will be judged by a 3-person panel, who will decide upon three finalists by the end of September 2019. These will go to a public vote during October on ww.eHealthNews.nz.

The winner will be announced at Digital Health Week in Hamilton Nov 18-22, 2019.

We are running a quick poll to gauge interest in the idea.

Do you think we should introduce an annual CiLN award?

I find that these sorts of awards are divisive between those who are nominate$/those who are not plus between those who are eligible/those who are not but are working in the domain. We are trying to support people in and into health informatics and I do not think that awards help in this regard.

But I should explain that I am anti-awards in general, not only regarding this suggestion. I commend people for thinking of ways that might encourage upskilling and achieving in this domain.

I like the idea of the award in general but is the criteria that the nominee must be a member too narrow?

I think it might be too early to have an award. Awards come with some gravitas and we need to have criteria (achievable but should
demonstrate exceptional performance so that it’s easy to see why/how a specific person should get the award).

Like Inga I’m not a big fan of awards because it singles out one achiever from many worthy achievers and what we want is a whole field of tall poppies, not a single tall poppy.

There are other ways to recognise performance or achievement, e.g. showcasing the work of an outstanding performer, acknowledging their
achievements in news stories and supporting their work in the workplace, or .

I worry about criteria, and it favours people from large organisations if you have public voting. I think shout-outs from colleagues displayed on slides between sessions or some such “Good job” type affirmation would sit better with me. I’m a cynical eye-roller at Awards ceremonies though …

I think it cant hurt celebrating each other successes. It’s a great way to help elevate each other up and encourage each other to do better.
I agree with most comments above… but some competition cant hurt

I believe that it is too early for CiLN to be suggesting awards. Partly for the reasons above and partly because CiLN is yet to cement itself and its purpose. CiLN has great potential but I caution against rushing into creating awards.

Thanks for the feedback everyone - with 85% of voters saying yes to the idea, we are moving forward with the plan for a CiLN award - more details on this to come soon.

Oops. I didn’t see the actual voting button so I just commented. Can I still vote?
